Kazakhstan Car Import Duty on Used Vehicles increased

In July 1, 2011 Kazakhstan government drastically increased its duty on used vehicles. Pleas see details below but please note that there is glimmer of hope as Kazakhstan is joining WTO this year (2013) and will have to reduce duty drastically just as Russia did in 2012. Russia reduced used car duty from 35 percent to 25 percent and new car duty from 30 to 25 percent. Import duties on certain types of tractors and trucks went down to 15 percent. Since Kazakhstan is in a Custom Union with Russia, its duty should be in the same neighborhood.

Customs duty on a 2007 Toyota Camry 1800 cc used to be $1035 but was raised to $7476, while a 2007 Toyota Camry 2400 cc used to be $1380, it is now charged $9785. If you want to import a 4000 cc Prado, rates increased from US$3,500 to a whopping $24,556 and 12% VAT is additional.

Before July 1, customs duties ranged from Euro 0.35-0.6 per cubic centimeters. After July 1, 5 years and older vehicles will be charge the duty rate will be Euro 4 per cc for engines of 1800-3000 cubic centimeters. Consequently, customs duty on an engine of 3000 cubic centimeters will be Euro 12 000, with VAT standing at 12%. For cars of 5 years and older vehicles with an engine of over 3000 cc, the duty rate has been raised to Euro 5.8 per cubic centimeter. Consequently, customs duty on an engine of 4000 cubic centimeters will make up Euro 23 000, with VAT standing at 12%.
