Situated at the northwestern corner of Africa, with its northernmost point only 29 km (18 mi) south of Gibraltar, Morocco claims a total area of 446,550 sq km (172,414 sq mi), of which the Western Sahara comprises 252,120 sq km (97,344 sq mi). Morocco proper is bordered on the N by the Mediterranean Sea and the two Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, on the E and SE by Algeria, on the S by Western Sahara, and on the W by the Atlantic Ocean, with a total land boundary length of 2,018 km (1,254 mi) and a coastline of 1,835 km (1,140 mi).
